The Ditson 111 was originally produced just for the Oliver Ditson Company in 1916. The introduction of this instrument gave birth to the most popular acoustic guitar shape of all time, the dreadnought. When it hit the market it became a hit among a variety of players and in turn led to the production of the Martin D series. This is the model that led to the D-18 about 15 years later. Quite a few decades after that (literally the next century), in 2007 the Martin Guitar Company released a limited edition run of the Ditson 111. Here we have a fine example of one.
To best represent such an important instrument, Martin recreated every detail. The original “Oliver Ditson Co., Boston, New York” stamp from 1916 was retrieved from Martin’s archives and used on the back of the headstock and center strip. This instrument is made from an array of excellent tone woods: mahogany back and sides, an Adirondack spruce top, Brazilian rosewood head plate and binding, and an ebony fingerboard and bridge. It also features forward shifted scalloped X bracing, and the Ditson’s unique single ring wood rosette..
The neck has a real vintage feel and is comfortable to grip. While it may not be for those players that like skinny, slim neck shapes, it's perfect for those that want an old school carve. It has a unique 1.875" nut width that is closer to a classical width compared to modern day acoustics.
Sound-wise, it's very big and open - this is a cannon, with strong projection. The nice thing is that even when played hard, it doesn't get muddy. There's a crispness and articulation that only comes from a guitar crafted as well as this. The dynamic range is impressive, and the end result is a surprisingly versatile guitar.
This one in particular has been upgraded with an LR Baggs pickup/preamp so you can take the guitar out for lives shows, go direct while recording, or just for general amplification. We plugged it in, and it sounds huge.
This Martin Ditson 111 is rare and truly spectacular. It is a pre owned guitar, and while it's in great condition, theres a bit of honest player wear, but ever so slightly (just surface level with a few marks). We did notice touch of separation on the fretboard at the first fret, and on the top behind the bridge, but both things have been vetted by our top tech in the repair and deemed to be fine. There are no issues. The guitar has been setup to play perfectly, and is ready to go. The original hardshell case is include.
