Gretsch Custom Shop Masterbuilt Stephen Stern G6128-JR Duo Jet Jr. Relic

We just took in a absolute stunner of a guitar, and it's a special one:  one of the last Gretsch guitars that Masterbuilder Stephen Stern ever built before he retired last year.  The full story of this guitar is below.  But first, here's why we have it now:

We originally sold it, and the buyer recently decided to have a custom-built Gretsch built for himself, so he parted with this one.  He only played it a little bit, so now it's back here at Truetone again in the same condition.  The guitar has been setup to play perfectly by the techs in our shop, and still comes with the Certificate of Authenticity, original case, and the unused Silverado strap.  This was one of our favorite Gretsch Custom Shop guitars we've ever had at Truetone, and we're thrilled to be able to offer it again!

The Gretsch Custom Shop is where the time-honored legacy reaches its creative apex. No instruments epitomize the extraordinary expertise and attention to detail of Gretsch’s most trusted hands like Custom Shop instruments. From modern versions of legendary Gretsch instruments to artist tribute models and specially requested one-off guitars, the Gretsch Custom Shop takes “That Great Gretsch Sound” to an entirely new plane, but also preserves and perfects it.

Truetone Music is proud to have a long and close relationship with Gretsch, especially with the Custom Shop and the legendary Stephen Stern.  As the founder and head Masterbuilder, Stern is responsible for the inception, growth and pinnacle status of the Gretsch Custom Shop.  Earlier this year, he announced his retirement, with only a few last guitars being finished as he rode off into the sunset.  This is one of them.  In fact, it's the last one to ever ship.

Every year, a special collection of guitars is presented at an exclusive dealer event, with the ability to bid and win some of the most impressive guitars ever created in Gretsch's 140 year history.  We were fortunate to score this one, and are proud to present the G6128-JR Duo Jet Jr. Relic Pink Paisley.

A photo is worth a thousand words, and this guitar is extremely photogenic - so we'll pause here to allow you to take it all in.  Be sure to check out all of the shots and to zoom in to really see the incredible detail on this guitar.

The guitar was crafted by one of the best in the history of guitar building, Stephen Stern, and it's one of the last he ever built for Gretsch.  He chose to build this Duo Jet Jr., a model rarely seen.  He also chose to do this one in Pink Paisley, with the Relic finish package.  While something exactly like this would not have existed back in the day, one could imagine that it could.  Whether then or now, this would be the coolest guitar on the block!

This G6128T-JR has a Michigan Mahogany body and neck with a tenon neck joint.  The wood was sourced from a very famous brand's former factory in Kalamazoo.  If that wasn't intriguing enough, for an extra special feature, it has a Brazilian Rosewood fretboard.  That means that this guitar can only be sold within the United States, as we cannot ship it overseas.  It's a super comfortable "C" profile mahogany neck, with binding and painted pink to match the body.  Red side dots add a nice touch.  As impressive as this guitar looks, and with the knowledge that it's a true collector's piece, it's not just that - and it plays amazingly well.

Of course, it also sounds amazing, thanks to a pair of TV Jones Super'tron pickups picked out by Stern.  This set is a replica of the original early 60's prototype design - basically a TV Jones Classic with steel blades instead of pole screws.  While it retains the classic Filter'tron clarity, it adds a bold full broadband punch.  Bridge blades are curved and neck blades are flat, resulting in optimal string to string energy.  The blades provide a larger magnetized surface, producing a greater inductance, and you get a little more output and body, accentuated towards the lower-mid range.  These pickups are great for a variety of styles.  It's been said that this design was loved by Chet Atkins....and Stephen Stern....and us!

Other features include an old school script logo in Mother of Pearl, nickel hardware of course a classic Bigsby to give it that true Gretsch design.  A deluxe hardshell case, high quality El Dorado leather strap, and signed Certificate of Authenticity are included.

As a premier Gretsch Custom Shop dealer for many years, we've had a lot of amazing guitars come through Truetone.  To say that this is a special guitar would be an understatement - it's literally the last Stephen Stern build to ever ship from Gretsch. Come to Truetone Music to experience it in person, or make it yours right here.
