Used And Vintage

For those looking to access their inner Jimmy Reed, we have a great find for you: this 1955 Kay Thin Twin.  1955 was a great year in music.  Chuck Berry recorded his first single, "Maybellene", for Chess Records, "Rock Around the Clock" was on the charts, and Colonel Tom Parker becomes Elvis Presley's manager.  This was the beginning of rock and roll, and the world was never the same.  At the same time, the Kay Musical Instruments Company was growing, and making some legendary guitars - including this Thin Twin.

Originally introduced in 1952, the model features a mahogany body with a maple top, and mahogany neck capped with a rosewood fretboard.  It's called a Thin Twin but there's nothing thin about it - this is a substantial body size and a neck that exceeds expectations even when reference a "baseball bat" style neck.  It's round and deep.  If you're into slim necks, this isn't the guitar for you - but if you like some serious chunkiness, this would be right up your alley.

All of the electronics work as intended.   The output is low but warm and clean - but also sounds amazing when put through a an overdriven amp. Even unplugged, the guitar is very resonant, and it's design provides a nice snap.  We knew this guitar looked cool, but were a bit blown away by how good it sounded.  The guitar's bridge position emits a powerful, slightly nasal sound that contains a subtle growl. Switching to the neck pickup provides a warm and robust option while still maintaining the signature chime and depth. When both pickups are activated, the guitar produces a bright, percussive, and clear tone, reminiscent of an acoustic guitar, with a well-balanced sound and tight low end.

The guitar is all original, other than replaced tuner buttons (done here at Truetone).  The finish has a sweet vintage patina, and vibe is just right. Also, the original case is included.

Rarely seen, especially in such good shape, this is a great guitar that falls into the affordable vintage category.   The techs in our shop have set it up to play perfectly.  This Kay Thin Twin has lasted for 70 years, and is well poised for the next 70.
