Here at Truetone Music, we've had a lot unique, historic and unbelievable guitars. This Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt Ron Thorn El Mocambo Stratocaster fits the bills on all levels. Only 25 were built, and this is the only one available at this time.
Built in 1948 in Toronto by restaurateur Joe Brown, the El Mocambo opened as a dream dining and dancing establishment, named after his favorite haunt, Mocambo, in California. A 22-foot sign - a giant palm tree with the neon-lit letters of “El Mocambo” - came to represent the venue. Decades later, after several changes in ownership, it was converted to rock house, and became THE place to play in Canada. Everyone from the Muddy Waters to the Ramones to U2 to Queens of the Stone Age graced the stage, and live albums by the Rolling Stones, Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Cars and Elvis Costello were recorded there. To say that the El Mocambo is a historic venue would be an understatement.
Fender Masterbuilder Ron Thorn, a Toronto native himself, came across the opportunity to obtain reclaimed wood from the El Mocambo and jumped on it. This led to an extremely limited run of guitars - there was enough wood for only 25 Stratocasters and 25 Telecasters. This limited-edition El Mocambo Stratocaster was built from 300-year-old eastern white pine timbers taken directly from the rafters and floor joints after the venue was renovated. Each board was examined with a metal detector to locate and extract nails, and the extremely tight-grained old-growth timbers are light and extremely resonant, making for amazing body wood for these guitars.

Thorn thought about adding a yellow-and-green paint scheme to the guitars, but after seeing the timbers, he thought he’d let the grain do the talking for him, aesthetically speaking.
“Once we got into the lumber and just how much character there was in it, it just seemed like a shame to cover that up,” he said. “We don’t need any color, it’s just beautiful exactly how it is.”

But he also paid homage to the vibe of the eral with hand-wound pickups from the Custom Shop’s venerable Josefina Campos, an African blackwood fretboard on quartersawn Canadian Maple neck, and gold mother-of-pearl inlays — complete with a palm tree in the fretboard. The neck plate also features the insignia of the El Mocambo. Full specs are below.
It's not just a Strat, it's a complete package - included is a special case and strap featuring the El Mocambo logo, a poster, stickers and Stevie Ray Vaughn DVD.
To say this is a special guitar would be an understatement. It's not just an instrument, or even an example of playable art - it's a piece of music history. It could be an important part of any collection, perhaps even the centerpiece, fitting for center stage.
The guitar is all original, comes with everything that originally came with it, and has been setup to play perfectly by the techs in our shop. It's a one of a kind opportunity, and we only have one.
