Masterbuilt Dale Wilson Active Clown Patch Strat

In the history of the Custom Shop, the Masterbuilders have built a variety of eye-catching guitars.  Not many caught are as likely to catch as much attention as this one - we present the "Clown Patch" Strat, built by Dale Wilson.


This true work of art was built for the 2015 Winter NAMM Custom Shop Showcase event.  It immediately caught everyone's eye, and became one of the biggest hits of the show.  Handpainted by Wilson himself through a very intricate and complicated process, the body of this guitar recreates a "patchwork" style motif that brings color and a 3D nature to the visual experience.  We really haven't seen anything else like it, and that's for good reason - it's the only one ever made.

Dale Wilson designed, built and painted the guitar from start to finish by himself.  It features a lacquer finish over an alder body, a one-piece maple neck with a "V" neck shape, vintage radius and radius, handwound Fat 50's pickups, and an active circuit for full tonal control.  It plays incredibly smooth, and proves to be a sonically versatile Strat.

The Clown Patch Strat was purchased right after the Shwocase event, even before the "winning" dealer received.  Since then, it has been owned by just one person, who never really played it - he displayed it in his climate-controlled home and cared for it deeply.  He brought it to us, so now it's available on the market for the first time.  It's a truly unique guitar, perfect for any serious collector of Fender's finest guitar and those that appreciate fine art.

This is a one of a kind guitar that will never be replicated, nor will there be another built by Wilson that even comes close to being the same.  Be sure to view the photos and examine the intricate detail that this guitar possesses.  It has been setup to play perfectly by the techs in our repair shop.  It comes with the original hardshell case as well as the Certificate of Authenticity and all of the original case accessories, paperwork, etc.  Come to Club Fender to see it today, or it to your collection right here.

About the Masterbuilder:

Dale Wilson arrived at Fender in 2003, joined the Custom Shop in 2005 and became a Master Builder in 2011. Building guitars has been a driving passion for the California native since childhood. “Ever since I can remember, I’ve always loved guitars,” he said. “I didn’t dream of being a rock star; I dreamed of building the ultimate guitar. I was equally enthralled with the guitars just as much as I was with the players.”

Woodworking runs in the Wilson family, and the requisite Custom Shop zeal for outstanding craftsmanship has long been part of Dale’s DNA. He did repair work and mods in a small guitar shop right out of high school in the late 1980s; subsequently moving on to stints at Dobro and Rickenbacker before arriving at Fender, where he worked on Guild, Gretsch and Benedetto guitars before beginning his apprenticeship with various Custom Shop Master Builders.

He enjoys calling upon his extensive and varied experience as a craftsman to create highly distinctive guitars such as the Resophonic Thinline Telecaster®. Wilson also built five beautiful custom guitars for the January 2011 NAMM Show while still an apprentice and was asked to sign the back of the headstocks, garnering him his Master Builder status.
