Used And Vintage Electric GuitarsThe 70's were a funky time, and funky times brought funky mods, which led to funky basses like this funk machine!  Here we have a heavily modified vintage Fender Precision Bass.  There is a lot going on with it....we've done all the digging we could, and are presenting with as much info as possible.  Here's the scoop:

This instrument began life in 1970 as an Ocean Turquoise P Bass.  That's when the body was built - and we say 1970 because that's the last year that this color was offered.  The neck is stamped 5-3-1971, and the pots are from 1971, so we think that's when the bass was completed - hence why the title is 1971 Precision Bass.  Also, based on the serial number (317498), it dates to 1971.

The finish is original - we see it as Ocean Turquoise that has faded and shifted over the years.  There were no colors in 1971 that looked like this - which makes us think this is the last of the Ocean Turquoise basses made in this era.  Also original is the P bass pickup (grey bottom).  After that, it gets really interesting, but first, a bit of history.

This bass was previously owned by the musician Brad Pie, who was the original owner.  Sadly, he passed away, so we can't ask him about it, but his widow told us the story when we recently took in a collection of his instruments.  He bought it as a new instrument as a young man in the early 70's and kept it his whole life, modifying it along the way.  In the 1990's, he played guitar with the great Johnny Otis.  Along with Johnny’s sons - Shuggie Otis (Guitar) and Nicky Otis (Drums) - Brad contributed guitar to the 1992 Grammy-Nominated “Spirits of the Black Territory Bands” by the Johnny Otis & His Orchestra group.  Many of the instruments from Brad’s collection are uniquely modified and come with various customized accessories. This particular instrument comes with a very nice strap, and has multiple mods.

The first thing you'll notice is that a Jazz bass pickup has been added near the bridge, along with a selector switch.  That turns a normal P bass into a more versatile PJ bass.  For those that want more tonal options on a vintage bass, this is a dream come true.  The tuners are original.  You'll also see that the bridge has been changed to a higher mass one for improved tone and sustain.  The original bridge is included in the case.  Speaking of which, the case is original as well (with Brad Pie's name across it).  The other modifications are more cosmetic (blue pearl pickguard) and for comfort (pad on the back).

Overall, the bass is in great shape and while there are plenty of marks and wear, it's nothing major.  Obviously it's not for the vintage collector that is seeking mint, all original, untouched instruments.  It's for the player that wants something unique, relatively affordable and that plays/sounds amazing - which this one does.  The bass has lasted over 50 years and is poised for the next 50.

This super unique, one-owner vintage Fender Precision is something special.  It has been vetted and setup to play perfectly by the techs in our shop.  It's ready to go!
