Here at Truetone Music, we are fortunate enough to get some of the coolest, most unique guitars by some of the best builders in the world. This is especially true when it comes to Gretsch Custom Shop guitars by legendary Masterbuilder Stephen Stern. We've had plenty, and loved them all, but that ride has come to an end - Stern has rode off into the sunset with a well-deserved retirement.
Also fortunately, we have a great client base that collected these guitars, and occassionally one will be become available. This creates an excellent opportunity - a chance to get an incredible Gretsch Custom Masterbuilt G6128-59 Duo Jet built by Stephen Stern.
A photo is worth a thousand words, and this guitar is extremely photogenic - so we'll pause here to allow you to take it all in. Be sure to check out all of the shots and to zoom in to really see the wood grain.
This G6128-59 Duo Jet is like none other out there. It was built in 2022 and well cared for since. We had this as a new guitar, and it was spec'ed out by us. Immediately upon receiving it, we sold it to one of long-time favorite customers. So, it never actually hit the open market. He owns a recording studio - it was utilized there but mainly lived in it's case for safe keeping - so this guitar is in excellent condition. It's super clean, without any dings.
This stunning guitar is a reimagining of a classic model. Ever since the single-cut Duo Jet emerged in the 1950's, players from George Harrison to Chris Cornell have favored Gretsch's main solid body guitar. It provides variety of tonal options, and is incredibly versatile. Not only that, it looks amazing too! The top is a transparent Gretsch Orange, which allows the figuring to show. You don't see see that very often, actually never - that's why we did it.
This G6128-59 Duo Jet has a mahogany body with a curly maple top, and is quite resonant. We noticed that before plugging it in. And, it's not too heavy - actually, it's light for a Duo Jet, weighing in at just 7.60 lbs. It will be easy to keep strapped on standing up all night. The neck profile is super comfortable, with the classic Gretsch C shape profile. It's a mahogany neck with an ebony fretboard, adorned with thumbnail Mother of Pearl inlays. Having a Bigsby B3C is a perfect for expressive playing and a completion of what a Gretsch like this offers.
We also went with the Tru Arc bridge, which is radiused to match the fretboard of the guitar. This enhances playability (and allows for lower action, if you're a close-to-the-frets kind of picker), as well as a slight improvement to intonation. The Tru-Arc has a more pronounced radius than the standard Gretsch bridge. It's also heavier, which increases tone and sustain. Typically, you'll see brass Tru-Arc bridges, but for this guitar we went for stainless steel at Stern's suggestion - not only does it match the rest of the hardware better, but it also has a full, even and smooth hi-fi response, with max sustain.
For tone, we went the classic route, with pickups that are perfect for any Duo Jet - the TV Jones Classic PAF set captures that vintage twang and growl characteristic of the late 1950's Filter'Tron. Originally designed from an analyzed 1959 "Pat. Applied For" Filter'Tron, the TV Classic is their most popular and most versatile pickup. Positioned etween a typical Fender (bright single-coil) and Gibson (darker & thick humbucker) with a unique growl when you dig in. Clean, compressed treble and mids breath life over a tight and controlled low-end. That's the sound of success when it comes to crafting an incredible vintage sounding pickup.
Of course it comes with the original case, El Dorado strap, and Certificate of Authenticity. The guitar been setup to play perfectly by the techs in our repair shop, and has immediately become one of our favorite guitars here.
The Gretsch Custom Shop is where the time-honored legacy reaches its creative apex. No instruments epitomize the extraordinary expertise and attention to detail of Gretsch’s most trusted hands like Custom Shop instruments. From modern versions of legendary Gretsch instruments to artist tribute models and specially requested one-off guitars, the Gretsch Custom Shop takes “That Great Gretsch Sound” to an entirely new plane, but also preserves and perfects it.
With Stephen Stern having retired, this G6128-59 is not only an amazing playing and visually stunning guitar, but it's also truly collectible. We don't except it to last long.
